Perhaps I'm misunderstanding how digiKam is handling image tags, but this doesn't seem correct:

Given a tag tree like:

Weather
> Clouds
> > Cirrus

If I select the Cirrus tag I expect to also get the Clouds and Weather tag on my image, but
when I select the Weather tag it's also assigning the Clouds and Cirrus tags to the image.
Is this by design or is there a setting that I've missed?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I finally located an answer to my question.

If you right-click on a tag (keyword) there is an option at the bottom of the dialog that says:
Toggle Auto which can be set to
> None
> Children
> Parents
> Both

The setting I need is to set Toggle Auto to Parents. This way choosing a tag will also choose all parent tags as well. It will not choose any child tags.
It seems odd that the default setting was Both, however, I'm very pleased to have located this setting.

Big thanks to all involved for making this impressive software! You've helped me wean myself off of Bridge for good! ;-)
