Cannot Access Camera on 4.6

Sat Feb 05, 2011 7:28 pm
I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSI. I am running Kubuntu 10.10. Since upgrading to KDE 4.6 I have been unable to access pictures on this device.

When attaching the camera via the USB port, I get the device notifier popup that correctly identifies the device. It gives me the option of opening via Gwenview, DigiKam, or Dolphin.

Opening in Dolphin (or Konqueror) shows two folders:

camera:/Canon EOS 450D (PTP mode)@usb:002,025
camera:/Canon EOS Digital Rebel (normal mode)@usb:

When attempting to open either folder, I am presented with "unknown error 150 bad parameters" and asked to file a complete bug report.

Using Digikam, F-Spot, and Gwenview results in similar errors.

Prior to the upgrade to KDE 4.6, I had no problems. Additionally, I can start VirtualBox, load a Windows XP session, and it can access the camera just fine, though this method is excruciatingly slow, not to mention infuriating to know I have to load Windows on my Linux system in order to access photos.

Something seems to have changed in the way this is handled, but not having paid close attention, I cannot say what it is. I do not know if it is specific to Kubuntu or a KDE problem specifically. As mentioned, this started when I upgraded to 4.6, so it seems at least partly to be a KDE issue.

The device does not appear to be mounted anywhere. At one time I was able to access the folders via the CLI in the /media directory. It no longer appears there when mounted.

Any advice or direction will be appreciated.

Please ensure all packages are up to date, and that no permissions errors are occuring.
Monitoring ~/.xsession-errors may give further information as to why this is occurring.

All packages are current.

I do not know what permissions errors to check or where to check. I do not see any permissions warnings in any of my logs during the period of time I was attempting this. Other than that, as noted, there is nothing created in /media (or /mnt), which is not how I am accustomed to this working. I have not been observant enough to know when this changed. I cannot tell where the device is being mounted. It is accessed via dolphin and konqueror with camera:/. It shows the two folders present mentioned in the OP, but when attempting to access them, I get the "unknown error 150 bad parameters" notice.

I cannot see anything in ~/.xsession-errors that seems relevant. I get a lot of errors for dolphin on a regular basis, but none from today are different than what they normally are.

In 4.6 HAL was deprecated for udev, so that could be problem. When you open the camera with Dolphin, does it appear in the sidebar? What happens if you only mount the camera? (Click on the black square where the eject button appears when mounted.)

I would try the following:
- Do you have a camera group? Is your user part of that group?
- Try to run lsusb and see if you can find your camera. If not, try sudo lsusb.
