Can I run Picasa and Digicam together?

Hi,
I am keen to migrate from Picasa to Digikam, but the rest of my family use Picasa, and migrating them will probably take longer than migrating my photos etc.
I think Picasa keeps its own database (for albums, faces, tags and albums - which we barely use at all, hence my wish to move to Digikam and start tagging etc.).
Our organisation, such as it is, is almost totally based on folders, so I'm not desperate to migrate any of the Picasa info to Digikam (except perhaps faces, but that shouldn't take long to start again in Digikam).
Can I run up Digikam, and let it find all our photos, while still using the Picasa front end to find things in folders etc.?
And am I right that Digikam will keep its own data in the photo metadata, rather than in a separate database, or does it too have its own database?
(Any help in the processes going on behind the scenes would be appreciated.)
Thanks in advance for any help,
