First of a note for American readers.
American dictionaries deliberately change the spelling
of words for the benefit of people who do not speak English
as a first language and even remove whole syllables in
some places. Theoretically this is a nice idea but the amount
of American media that is exported to the common wealth
causes much grief.


Currently I have my spell checker set to UK English which helps to
a degree but isn't a real fix either. The problem with this setting is
that NZ English has a lot of Maori words borrowed into it. Mostly
names of places, plants and animals but that's enough to cause
grief if you want to write a book about the kauri forest in the Waitakeri
ranges. Let alone if you're the sort to refer to a family meal as
'Kai* with the whanau**' : - )


Any way the point is that is there a significant amount of people who are
willing to make a New Zealand dictionary? I'm willing to if there are others.
I suppose Australia and South Africa could do with this sort of thing to in
which case the British dictionary should be called Common Wealth and
an English dictionary made with some Celtic mixed in for the sake of Britain
(assuming that there is need).
