Why not just put effort into translating the userbase manual into french?

I think (and know it from my own experience), users need differents approachs to learn tools. Official Manual is essential but lot of French people can read directly the English one.
I find it richer and more interesting to propose another point of view.

I absolutely agree with this - the Kdenlive Manual is an extremely useful reference tool, and more work on the French version (http://userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manual/fr) is always good, but other approaches are also needed for different purposes.

I remember Mick Fuzz from FLOSS Manuals asking on the old forum if anyone was interested in helping with a guide to editing with Kdenlive. He was told in no uncertain terms that his offer was unwelcome, he was just 'advertising' his site on the forum and that the Kdenlive Manual already served that purpose.
Luckily FLOSS Manuals made their guide anyway, and in the 2-day Kdenlive workshop I gave last week, I based much of the structure and teaching style on their Guide to Open Source Video Editing with Kdenlive (http://www.flossmanuals.net/how-to-use-video-editing-software), as it had a simple, logical flow and didn't swamp a new user with too much information. For specific questions and explanations of effects and functions, of course I referred to the Manual, as it is very complete and detailed.

Good luck with the book, Patricia - if you release your content under Creative Commons BY-SA then your work and the manual can be mutually beneficial - the same information and examples can be adapted for different purposes.
