Problems rendering NTSC HDV and DV

Thu Sep 06, 2007 7:12 pm

Using the 'latest' CVS/SVN versions of ffmpeg, mlt and kdenlive, I am still having problems rendering NTSC (HDV) 1440x1080 video.

Using "HDV 1080 60i" the output is very 'jerky', and the rendered video appears to be running faster than the original, and the audio gets completely out of sync. Each transition renders as a blank (black) screen with no audio for the duration of the transition. Rendering to HD 1440x1080 has the correct aspect ratio, but rendering to DVD 16:9 results in a 4:3 aspect with black bars at top and bottom.

I tried setting the project to "HDV 1080 50i" and the transitions now worked OK, but the video was still very 'jerky'.

I have tried the same project file running only with inigo, and the overall results were the same..

As a comparison, I tried some NTSC DV (720x480) 16:9 video files, and the results were just as bad.

I then tried some old 4:3 PAL video samples, and the output and transitions seemed to be working OK...

Hi.

Sorry, but at the moment I don't have time to make tests with NTSC.

Can you please do the following test for me:

try to play one of your NTSC HDV video clip with inigo:

inigo avformat:my_clip.mpg -consumer sdl profile=dv_ntsc

inigo avformat:my_clip.mpg -consumer sdl profile=hdv_1080_60i

The first command should play it in dv resolution, the second one in HDV resolution. Does it play correctly ?

Then, try to make a very simple project in Kdenlive that only contains one of your clips, choosing "HDV 1080 60i" as project format. Save the project and try playing it with inigo:

inigo avformat:my_project.kdenlive -consumer sdl profile=dv_ntsc

inigo avformat:my_clip.kdenlive -consumer sdl profile=hdv_1080_60i

Does it also play correctly ?

This will help us know where the problem is.

Also, what clips are you using as source ? Did you grab them from a NTSC HDV camera ?

Test results:

inigo avformat:my_clip.mpg -consumer sdl profile=dv_ntsc

- plays back in 4:3 with black bars top and bottom - video faster than original, and 'jerks' (same as with previous tests)

inigo avformat:my_clip.mpg -consumer sdl profile=hdv_1080_60i

- plays back in HD format, but still with faster/jerking video

Playing back from single-clip project file:

inigo avformat:xxx.kdenlive -consumer sdl profile=dv_ntsc

- plays back in 4:3 with black bars top and bottom - with faster/jerking video

inigo avformat:xxx.kdenlive -consumer sdl profile=hdv_1080_60i

- plays back in HD format, with faster/jerking video

The HDV original clips are from a Canon HV20 HD camera, using the latest version of dvgrab.

Robert Gadsdon.
