I'm having the exact same problem, remove space gives the error "cannot remove space in a track with a group" even when there are no groups. this is definatly a new bug in 0.7.6. same thing happens with the insert space option.

Yes, there was a bug that might affect several Kdenlive operations, I just fixed it in svn, the issue can be seen in our bugtracker:
