Same here. I converted from the svn version to 0.8.2 when it was announced and now it crashes every time I open a recent file. I tried to submit a bug report but it said there was no useful information in it.

No problem.
Just install last release of kdebase for Lucid. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install kdebase |

Hi lorenzo,
Thanks for the tip! It does work and upgrades KDE from 4.4.5 to KDE 4.5.3. Of course KDE gets the new look and the system tray looks different. Your command "sudo apt-get install kdebase" did not do anything the result was "kdebase is already the latest version". I then started "synaptic pakage manager" -> "reload" -> "mark all upgrades" -> "apply". Over 270 new files were installed. Virtuoso asked for a new Password! I have tested most of my programs and they do run normally. "Kontact" and "Kmail" didn't run anymore so I installed:- libakonadi-contact4 libkontactinterface4. I haven't finished testing everything. My advice to other users is:- 1. If you want to stay with the normal Kubuntu Lucid versions DON'T install the ppa KDE 4.5.3 version. 2. If you install from the backport ppa make a clonezilla image of your current Lucid installation and then install. |

My experience with the upgrade to ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports.
1. open a terminal 2. Type sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports 3. start "synaptic pakage manager" -> "reload" -> "mark all upgrades" -> "apply". Over 270 new files download. 4. Virtuoso asked for a new Password! Leave it blank. 5. Every thing installs and at the end it gets stuck (trying to start Virtuoso) 6. Just reboot your computer! 7. After logging into KDE Synaptic will start-> just close it. Open a terminal and type "sudo dpkg --configure -a" 8. Reboot again 9. Clean up your desktop and reinstate the Wallpaper & desktop as it was before the upgrade. 10. Start "synaptic pakage manager" -> "reload" 11. In the "Search" field type "libkontactinterface4" and mark it for installation. 12. In the "Search" field type "libakonadi-contact4" and mark it for installation. 13. Click on "Apply" to install. 14. Thats it! Steps 11, 12 & 13 are necessary if you use Kontact & Kmail. If you haven't yet installed the new kdenlive version 0.8.2 then do it now. Everything runs normally for me after the upgrade. I find that my startup is much faster now. |

Damnit... I have the exact same problem. Upgrade and cannot add a clip or it crashes immediately with "no useful information". It crashes every time.
I have waited forever, since the last upgrade fraked everything. I had kdenlive working but then it was effectively unusable. Now it is totally unusalbe - after looking forward to this forever. Does anybody know how to find older versions... Or another video editing program that works ok in Linux? |

Hi LAWRITABEIA
Press Alt+F2 Type "kdenlive" press enter. or If you are using UBUNTU add it to your menu. System -> Preferences -> Main Menu Kubuntu you should find the program in Multimedia. Hi genson & Anthrogue Using UBUNTU. Try adding the kubuntu backports ppa. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports start synaptics -> reload -> "mark all upgrades" -> "apply". This will not install Kubuntu but will update your KDE used by UBUNTU. |

Hi Warwec,
I'll try and post the results. Thanks for answering. |

waverc: I'm in Linux Mint 8 KDE. The KDE version is 4.3.5
If I do: "adding the kubuntu backports ppa. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports start synaptics -> reload -> "mark all upgrades" -> "apply". Is that likely in any way to screw the computer.. and necessitate backups, etc. Or is it pretty safe, assuming it works in Linux Mint 8 KDE? |

hi Anthrogue,
As far as I know Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. Your KDE version is very old thats why it crashes. You should use clonezilla to make an image of your linux partition and then try. I suggest you rather upgrade mint. Version 10 has KDE 4.6 and kdenlive should run then. read these links:- http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1676 http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2 |

The Great thing about linux is that you can use different desktops on the same computer.
I find that if you use GNOME you should also have an installation of KDE too and visa verse. There are many programs that run more stable having both installed. How to install Kubuntu on your UBUNTU GNOME. If you decide to install both then be aware that your boot splash screen will change to kubuntu. See below for a tip: to reinstate the UBUNTU splash screen! 1. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports 2. sudo apt-get update 3. sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop During the installation you will be prompted to either use GDM or KDM as your login manager. It is totally up to you as to which one you pick. You will be able to get to either Gnome or KDE with either. Select GDM to keep the login the same. Select KDM to use the KDE login 4. After the installation REBOOT 5. you can now choose which desktop you want to use (KDE or GNOME) in your login screen. I think it is one of the symbols at the bottom of the screen in GDM. Sit back and relax and in a short time you will have latest version KDE installed along side your Gnome desktop manager. TIP! To Change the splash screen back to UBUNTU. Then run the following: Code: sudo apt-get remove --purge usplash* this will remove all of the artwork for Ubuntu/Kubuntu and the usplash configuration files. It will also remove the packages kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop, but these are only meta packages and the actual desktops will not be removed, then: Code: sudo apt-get install usplash usplash-theme-ubuntu this should create a new initrd.img with the correct splash theme, if not then: Code: sudo update-initramfs -u or Code: sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash one of these commands will update the initrd.img file. |
