OK, I admit it. I've been bad ( ) I probably *should* have been spending my time finishing up the logo based on that very first draft I showed. I couldn't help myself and got playing with Blender. I was trying to create something that could both the a professional looking logo and icon. Here's what happened: The nice thing about creating something in Blender instead of Inkscape is that it can then be easily animated. Why would we want to do that? Well, with a stable, easy to use video editor arriving in Linux for the first time ever (not to mention eventually Mac and Windows now KDE is cross platform) I predict a lot of people are going to start using Kdenlive. What if we gave them a nice high res, good quality "Edited with Kdenlive...download it free at Kdenlive.org" type video, they could download here and put at the end of their videos? What if that started being seen on Youtube videos and video podcasts all over the place? Ardour managed to get sponsorship after building a name for itself, and enjoys significant help from a number of highly skilled volunteer coders. Seeing how well Kdenlive KDE4 is going now, there is every reason we can create a similar thriving community to support and help JB make it even better. Obviously first we need stability so people can use it. If you're reading this you can help here, and now is the perfect time. Just get the latest version with the easy Kdenlive Builder Wizard and report one (or more!) detailed, accurate bugs. Obviously, if you can code, I'm sure no one would object to patches :D. The second part is just making sure that people (especially contributors) *hear* about Kdenlive. That's where I'm hoping I can help. If you blog, have forum signatures elsewhere or have any opportunities to show software to interested people, you already know how you can help. Anyway, I know it's "not quite" what you asked for JB  , and if you prefer just say the word and I can go back and finish the first original draft. Either way I'd be interested to hear feedback. |

Well, first I was also thinking about an image (animation would of course be nice too) that could be used as some kind of credit to Kdenlive... About your logo / icon: The "K" in the icon is an exact copy of the icon used for the application menu in the KDE desktop. I don't think it is a good idea to use it like that, because this "K" is widely known to be the KDE menu shortcut... I think it is a bit confusing, and in my opinion, the icon looks a bit too much like two existing icons put together. Just my opinion, I don't want to be rude... So I would either rework it so that it doesn't look like the "K" menu (maybe have the "K" printed directly on the black clap), or try to work on your first version... Don't know what other people think, both options could be fine... |

Thanks for the feedback! Compared to what Linus Torvalds usually calls the BSD people, it was the pure definition of polite. ;) I can also see your point completely. I was thinking of it more from a "It's video editing...on KDE4" perspective thus the logo, however it was a bit much and I can see that most people probably don't think of that as the KDE4 logo, so much as the "Start Button". Is this more along the lines of what you were thinking? If we can get the logo/icon so you love it, turning it into a "Made with Kdenlive" image will be easy. |

Hi. Thanks, the logo looks like I thought... however, after thinking about it, I am not sure about the "K" stuff. Kdenlive is a KDE application but it's not part of the "official" KDE packages, and I am wondering if using the "K" logo is really appropriate... So I am sorry I don't really have an idea about how to redesign the icon... but one other important thing is that the icon must be readable on light and also on dark backgrounds... Below is a quick test I did (taken from the Kino icon)... what do you think of something like it ? |

hi all! first post (i'm alberto villa from mailing list) about the K matter... what about using that circle around the K to draw a stylized cinema projector (or photorealistic as i wrote in the image... but i think stylized is better... should try)? that one could be the small reel, and the D could be drawn with the big reel... here is a rough (rough rough rough) draft, use your imagination the font could be something similar to the one used by cinephiliac, it's nice and elegant, i like it and isn't the "ciak" icon too similar to kino's one? we could use the K (you, jb, used a K in your previous test so i think it's ok) with just a reel instead of that (and it would be just an evolution from previous kdenlive, which had a film as icon) |

Absolutely. I'd been thinking about this already. The idea is to have a white glow around the clapper so it's visible on dark backgrounds. Light from behind also suits the film theme, film being projected light. The text can be mid tone, so it's dark enough to see on a white background, yet light enough to see on a dark background. Alternately the text could be black on light backgrounds and white on dark backgrounds. Quote:

I'll play round with a few options that don't use any kde logo at all. Interestingly though Kdenlive is listed as a KDE multimedia app along with K3B and Kmix at http://userbase.kde.org/Applications/Multimedia . I did notice that none of the other KDE apps use the KDE logo in theirs though. |
