Well, we're approaching the long awaited release of the KDE4 beta version of Kdenlive. From the look of it, it's been some very dedicated work by a small number of people putting in a large number of hours, and every one deserves huge congratulations. Now my question is, how can the rest of us who aren't QT / KDE hackers help out in a way that makes a meaningful difference? 1. The first simple way I can see is to start reporting bugs on the SVN version by running the easy to use Builder Wizard (at http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.ph ... tent=85826). 2. Secondly, to state the obvious, we need more coders here! Now you may not be a coder, but what can we do to help *get the word out to coders who may become interested?*. To me the obvious place to start is to go for a story in the KDE-digest and to post the release of v0.7 in developer related sections of your distributions forums (especially if your distro is KDE based). I'd suggest emphasising the importance of Kdenlive to Linux in general. We all know that one of the only things people say you just "can't" do on Linux is video editing. With just a bit of help, Kdenlive could wipe this complaint off the map. Better yet, it will make it easier for everyone to show off what we can do to the world with slick looking videos all over Youtube, Blogs and all kinds of other sites. 3. Third, the site Admin (JBM?) has asked for tutorials on using Kdenlive. Guess what? With the KDE4 version you can now screen record, edit, add titles and compress all in the one program! Now we have one simple, easy way to create video tutorials and share them with the world quickly. 4. Fourth is an easy one! Post! With each new post, especially positive or helpful ones, adds to the feeling of a vibrant community growing Kdenlive. This attracts more users, and in time a percentage of those users become contributors, making a better program and bringing more people. This is the growth cycle. Are you tired of hearing that all video editing software on linux is "close, but not quite there..."? I am! Let's start the few small actions like posting (here and elsewhere) that starts really building a community and Kdenlive into something world class. That New Topic button (up the top left if you're logged in) is really, really easy to press! With the release of the next versions of the major distro's including KDE4 there's going to be a sure of interest in KDE. This is a unique opportunity to upgrade people's perceptions of what's possible both on the desktop *and* in Linux video editing. This is a unique opportunity to get word out about the KDE4 version of Kdenlive. This is a unique opportunity for all of us to expand what's possible with open source *and* get a faster, more robust, feature-rich free (as in beer *and speech*) video editor in the bargain. So, what's the first thing you can help with? 8-) |

Actually you list is quite comprehensive - probably why you have not got much response. But a few comments: - Use kdenlive, and report bugs (as you wrote), but do try to make the bug reports as comprehensive as possible, provide information about revision of Kdenlive, steps to reproduce, screenshots where appropiate, gdb logs if crash related, etc. - Review other bugs/issues - especially old reports, and post a comment if you can or can not reproduce the issue using recent Kdenlive SVN. - Join #kdenlive on irc.freenode.net - help out newcomers in real-time, both to compile and use Kdenlive - Update the wiki pages with documentation about how to use Kdenlive. |

Just thought of another big one... Add Kdenlive to your signature on other forums! Many of us here have large numbers of posts on other software / technology / film forums. Adding Kdenlive to your signature turns every single one of your previous posts into another chance to get newcomers interested and it's so quick and easy! |
