I have already asked for text outlining 2,5 years ago:

So what changed since then? I had some hopes towards 0.7.x but I did not find it. Perhaps I did not look properly.
My humble wish is to have at least text capabilities of the Kino Titler - text outline with selectable width (Kino allows 0-3px) and opacity. This is very handy tool. It ensures that your text will be readable on changing background. This is something even simplest video titler should have!

The workaround I found is to use SVG. But this renders Titler existence questionable. Why not support title clip via SVG straight away. Titler can be "outsourced" to Karbon :) See my another post in brainstorming about it.

Note: In the original reply, 'uchian' stated that text outlining is something very complex, but I have doubts. At least Kino can handle this gracefully for ages.

Well, than you didn't wait for 2.5 years for nothing! Kdenlive's current svn (soon to be released 0.7.7) has support for text outline in titles, with variable width, color and opacity!
