I've checked out a recent cvs build of 0.6 as far as I can tell KDEnlive currently only supports DV and HDV video capture and I would very much like to see v4l2 support added to this list- more specifically support for capturing PAL/NTSC DVD res video in MJPEG format, unless someone knows of a better quality to performance/disk space codec for analogue capture supported by FFMPEG other than MJPEG. At the moment I have to use xdtv aka xawdecode for analogue video capture under Linux as its the only program I know of that is capable of DVD-res v4l2 capture to MJPEG with rt preview. The problem with xdtv is that its a dead, unsupported project now which sadly never made its way into either Debian or Ubuntu. The good news is that xdtv uses ffmpeg as its encoding backend just as KDEnlive does so there should be no major probs in implementing this feature. I'm well aware that VHS and anlogue video got phased out in the 90's but there is still very much a demand for the ability to capture analogue video, just as theres still lots of music only on tape or vinyl that people will want to transfer to a digital medium and this capability will go a long way to making KDEnlive a more complete and attractive solution for video editing. |

I personally have a Hauppauge PVR card that I use with the ivtv drivers to digitize analogue footage (since I didn't have the money for a DV-Cam with S-video-In). I do not feel that anything is missing when I do a simple "cat /dev/video0 > myvideo.mpeg" on the command line and import the resulting mpeg into Kdenlive afterwards.

I would have to agree, this feature needs to be badly supported. For example, my Logitech Quickcam Express Plus only shoots in v4l2. It won't capture right in v4l.
Please support it! ^_^ |

It does use v4l2 since v0.7. Actually, it just invokes ffmpeg command line utility to do it. If your Logitech camera is not supported, it is because ffmpeg does not support the format the camera is using. |
