Windows version ?

Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:00 pm

Hi there,

I would like to know if, with the KDE4 plate-form, a Windows (and MacOS) version of kdenlive will be released ? I think there is a tremendous demand for such a good and free video editing program on Windows.

thank you for kdenlive !

KDE here is not at stake.

Kdenlive is the graphical editor to MLT video editing framework. MLT is multi-threaded and relies on a bunch of GNU/Linux libraries. Porting to Windows would demand compiling all libraries under Windows and then using a multi-threaded environment. For this reason, it will be hard to port Kdenlive to Windows. This work would rely on the shoulders of volunteers.

And when you have a good level in programming, usually you run MacOsX or Gnu/Linux or FreeBSD, you only install a free environment and use it. You don't loose time on ancien systems like Windows. Finding programmers with good skills and convincing them to port to Windows is hard.

For these reasons, unless someone comes up and ports all the environment to Windows, don't expect a port to Windows. So if you are running Windows, expect to invest 50€ in a hard drive and migrate to GNU/Linux.

To give you an example, I am starting a new film in collaboration with a journalist on Monday. We cannot waste time using Windows. So the journalist migrated to GNU/Linux. We share the film on SVN et voilà. Editing is done in Kdenlive. A quad core computer with SATA drivers costs 300€. This is life. When a system is SOOO outdated like Windows, you just trash the hard disc and go to something else.

Now this is free software. If you are bold enough, look for programmers on websites and ask them to port Kdenlive. Just my opinion: noone is interested. The interested guys are programmers and already running a free station.

superdre, stop your troll ....

if you are good programmer enough, test and debug kdenlive ....

for me i don't care of redmond programs, it's not for money, because it's so easy to take hundred professionnal program on emule ...

Open source software is may be the only place on the world where people try to work and help together, without money for almost all the time ...

thank you

Needing to use a really good video editor made it very difficult for me to switch entirely to Linux. I use tons of software and most of my needs are met wonderfully with Free software on Ubuntu. But video editing was the one last thing where the Linux offerings have been very poor. Now things are very much looking up, thanks in no small part to Kdenlive. Also, there is an embarrassment of riches on Windows for video editors. There are a number of excellent packages that cost less than $100 and are almost professional in their abilities. So I don't really see much impetus for doing a lot of work to port Kdenlive to Windows.

It is now much easier to switch to Linux then it was when I did it about 3 years ago. The OS is of course much more refined. You can try virtual machines without losing your Windows install. You can get Linux on a USB stick. You can buy laptops from Dell with Linux. It's much easier to install and your hardware will probably all work without even installing drivers. Frankly it's easier to install Linux than windows especially when you take into account drivers and all the software CD's you don't need cause all software is available from online repositories.

You can actually try Kdenlive by installing, for instance, Ubuntu in a virtual machine using VirtualBox on Windows. Then install all the Linux software you want. All no cost. VirtualBox can even support multiple CPU's now so performance should be okay. This is a little complicated I guess, but it's also quite educational and interesting - if you're a little bit of geek anyway!

VirtualBox is a slow way to try out Ubuntu, but it's not a bad way to have a look around, get used to customising things to taste, installing and updating etc. But I wouldn't want to actually edit video in such an emulation without a super capable PC.
Anyone with such a beast is likely to be quite flush with cash and able to shell out for a Windows NLE in the £60+ area.

Those of us who delight in finding free solutions don't have much choice on Windows, but installing Ubuntu for real costs nothing but time and effort... and that's a worthwhile beneficial investment in time... it's an educational challenge.

Even if you're a Windows user scared of messing up the boot process and getting locked out from your main OS, what would it be better to buy for the same money :
a - a commercial editor which may be buggy and will go out of date
b - a second hard-drive to boot Ubuntu on its own drive, leaving the main one safe ... giving you access to all the Linux goodness and giving you a ton of new storage space too? Much better value for money... even if you don't get on with it you'll still have new diskspace for all that video :)
