I had an earlier version of kdenlive installed at one stage, and I was sure there were quite a few transitions (18+) but there now appears to be only four...? Am I remembering some other app...??

kdenlive has four transition types (plus 10-15 blending transitions if you install frei0r plugins - highly suggested), but "composite" and "luma" offer lots of transition effects. just scroll down the "image file" menu in the luma transition dock to discover them: basically, they're opacity masks. also, you can download (and upload, sure!) new luma images from kde-files.org: just go in "settings > download new lumas...", and you'll get a list of them
