Yes but you need to be using 0.8.2 or svn for this, you get a progress bar on each thumbnail in the Project Tree and a job count. Proxy creation in latest kdenlive is well implemented.

Which Kdenlive version are you using?
Recent builds from GIT show you the progress in the project tree panel. Version 0.8.2.1 should also show some progress bar on every clip being proxymized in the tree if I remember correctly.
