Feedback about Jog Shuttles

Mon Feb 09, 2009 4:41 pm

Dear friends,

I would like to hear your feedback about Jog Shuttles. I am interested in Contour Design - ShuttleXpress. Do you recommend other products? Can you slow down or fasten read using the wheel? I would like to hear the sound faster or slower.

Kind regards,

Jean-Michel

I'm also interested in getting a Contour jog shuttle, the Shuttle pro v.2.
I've tried to find out how well it works under linux but havent found much.
Does it work? How is the setup for the buttons?
Kdenlive seems to be somewhat supporting it, but I don't want just some application specific support. I want system support. I'd like to use the shuttle in any of my work tools.
Is this possible?

I have a shuttle express and use it for every project I do on Kdenlive. I had to hack the source-code and re-compile to get it to work (the buttons are not configurable otherwise) - see http://www.kdenlive.org/mantis/view.php?id=2268

There is a small bug with the buttons being recognized twice (once on down and once on release), I did a dirty hack on the source to fix that too, but in most cases that wont be a problem - for example if you have buttons for Set IN and Set OUT points, it doesn't matter if they get triggered twice or not. It only matters if you assign things like Play to it (in which case click = play, release = pause).

Overall it works great and significantly speeds up my editing time. I am used to more traditional edit systems, so using a jog-shuttle is more natural to me. Right hand for mouse and shuttle, left hand for keyboard.. very efficient.

I wanted to edit the reply above but seem to be unable, as each attempt triggers the spam filter.

Just wanted to add the link to the 2nd bug: htt p : // www . kdenlive . org / mantis / view.php ? id=2273

Am posting this from a different IP address having logged in and out again in hopes it will actually allow me to post.

Spam protection is great - but when it stops actual users posting messages or makes it so infuriating that no one wants to any more.. kind of defies the point of having it.

I have a large write-up of my experience doing 2 work projects on Kdenlive, with feature suggestions and plenty of bugs, but when I tried typing it here I ran into the Spam filter.. after many tries I finally gave up.

Are there any other forums for Kdenlive where I could post it? This forum is pretty much screwed for me.. 9 out of 10 times trying to post I get the Spam message and have to wait ages / change IP / log in & out etc to even try and post. Can't even edit my own posts... WTF?

NOTE: Nope. triggered the spam filter again.. will try spacing out the URL (to your OWN bug tracker..)

>December, tough luck. Seems like the spam filter has a grudge against you...

So, basically Jog shuttle support is per application? And that is unstable?

Can't the device be setup in the system (Gnome or KDE) to work as a keyboard or something similar?

Yup.. spam filter definitely has a grudge against me :-(

Its function is not really designed in a way that KDE / Gnome would be able to configure it, since the actions you set for the buttons are typically very much app specific. Jog Shuttles are purely designed for video editing.

I think the Kdenlive Jog/Shuttle interface is good, it allows the most common actions you would assign to the buttons to be set. I'm not convinced that having it setup as shortcuts (like a keyboard) would be any advantage, and since KDE / Gnome don't recognize it that way (by design), it would probably be a lot of coding.

Unstable? No. Once you have it setup, it works flawlessly. Once the 2 bugs I mentioned are fixed.. the only extra step in Linux is adding a udev rule (to allow non-root users to access it) - you can google that (or there is a post in these forums somewhere with more info) - wont post the links as not to enrage Mr.Spamfilter.

I can post my dirty hacks to the code for those to bugs if anyone wants. They are not suitable as proper patches, since they would break any other model of jog-shuttle. If I get time and there is interest I can try and write proper patches..
