Hi, I am running kdenlive 0.6 on kubuntu 8.04 and was wondering whether there is any new development with regard to having a later kdenlive version on kde 3.5 as the last anouncement regarding this topic is from last summer. Thanks,
Matthias

No, sorry. The KDE 4 version of Kdenlive required an almost complete rewrite. The KDE 3 version of Kdenlive is now unsupported and there is no plan to update it.

The presence of Kdenlive 0.6 in recent GNU/Linux distributions is a packaging error. The only recommended package is Kdenlive 0.7.x. If you are using Kdenlive 0.6, you may encounter grave bugs and we encourage you to upgrade. Sorry for that. For one question on the forum, maybe thousands of people are asking the same thing. So why not bump Kdenlive version to 1.x in a few weeks. Also it may be usefull to merge back KDE4 branch in svn trunk. What do you think? |

No, Kdenlive 0.6 in Ubuntu 8.04 is not a packaging error. Kdenlive 0.7.x needs a recent distribution, because it at least requires a good KDE4 and Qt4 version.
Ubuntu 8.04's KDE 4 packages are outdated and not maintained anymore (stopped 4 months ago at 4.1.2 version). I think packaging a reliable version of Kdenlive 0.7.x for Ubuntu 8.04 is just not possible, because it would require to update lots of system components. All recent distributions provide Kdenlive 0.7.x, if users want it, they need to upgrade to the latest version of their distribution. Bumping the version to 1.x will not change that fact. Regarding the move of the KDE4 branch to trunk, yes I think it is really needed. I will look at it soon. At some point, I think moving to KDE svn server would also be a good decision. |

Thanks for clarifying those technical details. I will then upgrade to the next kubuntu version once it is released.

When I meant packaging error, I mean that Kdenlive 0.6 is fully bugged and it will probably not meet your expectencies. Please upgrade to Kdenlive 0.7 which is a complete rewrite for Kde4. To my knowledge, Kdenlive 0.7.2 is very stable.
* Upgrade to Kubuntu 8.10 . You should be able to do so using kubuntu repositories. Follow the traditional procedure: apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade * Install Kdenlive 0.7.2 using Ubuntu packages. Ask for help on the forum or on Kubuntu forums. Ubuntu and Kubuntu are based on Debian packaging system. If you add the proper repositories, you may even be able to migrate from Kubuntu 8.10 or to Ubuntu 8.10. |

Thanks for your help and exaplanations . However, at the moment I urgently need a running and well configured system for my job. I also prefer to do later a clean new install instead of upgrading an already installed system. |
