Well, I may have "somehow" did this to myself. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I have Kdenlive 0.78. A couple of days ago I got a strange message from Update Manager about not being able to update all components due to a partial upgrade. What the? Well, like an idiot I followed their advice. When I saw the list of packages to be upgraded, many of them revolved around kdenlive. And at first I thought "maybe .80 is out!". Not so.
So nothing really noticeable happened until I tried to edit a video project I was working on. Now in that project, whenever I hit a transition, the video playback goes from smooth to unbearable. It's actually to the point where it's unusable. :( Here's what I've checked so far: * I'm still on .78 of kdenlive * I'm still on 0.7.0 of mlt I tried re-installing ALSA, thinking at first it was an audio issue. After removing the transition I now know it's not. Somehow it's related to a video issue. Now here's the weird thing. If I hit the dropdown option in the project monitor, uncheck "Real time (drop frames)", then go back in and check it, the render is then quite smooth. That might be an acceptable workaround but it seems to cause Kdenlive to crash part of the time. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps just a clean uninstall/reinstall of kdenlive and all it's dependencies? Thanks Edit: I uninstalled/installed Kdenlive .78 from sunab's repository. Still did not fix the issue. :( Update: still no joy. Kdenlive has taken a turn for the worse on my system. As an experiment, I created the same project with OpenShot, expecting the same choppy issues. OpenShot played it fine, no problems. O_o I've since tried changing the audio/video output settings but that doesn't do anything either. Would really appreciate any tips. |

mlt 0.7.0 is too new for the release version of 0.7.8. It should be 0.5.10.

ddennedy,
Thanks for the tip! I'll try that when I get home. Not sure how I got 0.7.0 .... |

Okay, now I'm confused.
When I used "dpkg -s melt" it shows sunab as the maintainer. So I assume I got v0.7.0 of MLT from sunab's repository when I installed v 0.7.8 of kdenlive? If this is true, then why have 0.7.0 installed with Kdenlive if it doesn't work well with 0.7.8? Or am I missing something? Okay...so I went to MLT's website and downloaded/installed v0.5.10 of MLT. Then Kdenlive began crashing very quickly after doing anything with a video project. Okay, now time to complete uninstall everything and start back over. I thought I had everything uninstalled but after reinstalling Kdenlive it shows v0.5.10 of MLT and dpkg shows sunab's v0.7.0. Which I confirmed is the version downloaded from sunab's repository when installing 0.7.8. I have somehow TOTALLY messed my system up. I searched the forums for how to completely remove Kdenlive and all it's dependencies with no luck. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I should try next? Is it possible incompatible versions of MLT and Kdenlive are on sunab's repository? |

Hi, you are facing some problems and I am the cause of them, I apologize.
I have pushed mlt 0.7.0 in my ppa, and as Dan said it is a bad idea. So I will revert this as soon as possible. Stay tuned. Sunab. |

Just got version 0.8.0! And as soon as I upgraded the choppy playback issues went away. YAY!!!
Now here's the weird thing. When I run the config wizard MLT shows at 0.5.10. I've checked my system and can't figure out how kdenlive is getting MLT at 0.5.10. This probably happened when I manually installed 0.5.10 from source. Would any kind soul be willing to give me some tips on how to fix this? Thanks in advance... |

And kdenlive doesn't shout : unsupported mlt version?
If you have compiled mlt from source, you have to uninstall it. Typically when some compiles he uses /usr/local as prefix. So look there. |

More troubles... :(
Tried to clean up v 0.5.0 of mlt and somehow made things worse. Re-installed Kdenlive and cleaning up and app does not launch from menu. From a command line I get: kdenlive: error while loading shared libraries: libmlt.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I searched for how to get that .so back but with no luck. Installing melt did not fix the problem. Help please????? |

The lib you mention is in libmlt4 package.

Installed libmlt4....now when I start Kdenlive it's asking me for the location of the MLT profiles. The path listed in the dialog says /usr/share/mlt/profiles. That directory is not on my computer. Don't know how to get the profiles installed.
* Sigh * Edit - Okay, I went through package manager and removed ANYTHING related to MLT, MELT or Kdenlive. Re-installed. Kdenlive is now working again but MLT version in the config wizard still shows 0.5.0. Edit - Question for anyone who knows the source code...where does Kdenlive get the version number for MLT from? Is it possible I have a config/settings file left over from a compile of 0.5.0 from source? |
