Linux support for Black Magic Intensity capture playback of 10bit Mov's and DPX
Wed Apr 22, 2009 12:49 pm
I'd like to draw your attention to this: www.blackmagic-design.com/press/detail.asp A SDK will be available for Linux to enable the Black Magic 'Intensity' to be supported in Linux NLE's. Can kdenlive support greater than 8 bit video? |

I have paying clients using my BlueFish444 SDI module for MLT. Some of them are interested in Black Magic and HDMI capture would be interesting to kdenlive users. Therefore, I have already submitted a request for more information with them. As soon as I know the licensing implications, I will let you know. Many companies in this space require NDA, which prevents making the MLT plugin open source. |

You also asked about 10 or 12 bit support. No, sorry, its not available at this time, and no immediate plans. Basically, all existing code would have to be updated and some plugin systems like frei0r has no provision to support it either. |

Dan, thanks for the reply.
If adding capture via hdmi from the Intensity is considered, I think the real purpose would be in order to capture uncompressed 4:2:2 10bit certainly from any HDV consumer/prosumer vidcams that have the hdmi, bypassing the HDV compression totally, For example the HV30 with it's 'full' size progressive sensor gives 1920x1080 uncompressed 4:2:2 out of the hdmi. But if no plans for greater than 8bit support in kdenlive, does it not defeat the point of the whole BM Intensity support anyway? Are your contacts interested in the capture from the BM Intensity using a different codec offering better than HDV quality but not a good as raw? I know this is perhaps outside the realms of 'consumers' as a capture/playback machine with at least a 4 disk RAID is required to handle the data.
Thanks again. |

Sorry, I do not have many answers for you, and I do not really have any contacts at Black Magic Design. If the SDK only lets me capture using specific codecs, then I am not interested. The API must provide low level access to the uncompressed video and audio for me to decide what to do with it. There are a couple of use cases that do not require 8/10-bit support in kdenlive. One is to acquire 24p without reverse pulldown processing. The other case - not applicable to kdenlive (but is to MLT) - is live video switching and processing.

I believe that some Intensity users are using a Cineform HD codec instead of the BM provided ones so I guess/assume that it possible to use whatever codec and raw capture. Thanks again. |
