Hey Devs, throw some advice my way

Mon Nov 10, 2008 9:47 pm

I will be selecting some programming courses soon, and will be planning to help develop NLE's for linux.

Projects with the most potential seem to be kdenlive, lumeria, lives, pitivi, and maybe a few others.

So, what language would be most useful to learn for helping with these projects? specifically for pitivi and kdenlive... what kind of programmer do you guys need most?

Anyways, thanks!

PiTiVi is based on Python, I think.

Kdenlive is C++, MLT is C.

Whats your level? Uni? Something else?

It will be most likely Uni, or an "institute of technology".

A very short and quick answer:

And, what is your previous experience with programming?

Learning to program is first and foremost not about language, but understanding data structures, algorithms, stuff like that. Depending on language comes the "practical" stuff, such as (for some languages) memory management. If you already have a solid grasp on those matters, then for Kdenlive we need C++ skills. If not, then you, wrt. your education, need to learn those subjects first, but if you really want to get your feet wet in Kdenlive development, and your UNI offers a course in C++ that fits with your current skills, that would be the most relevant for Kdenlive.
