Hi, I use jack to connect most of my programs to my rme hdsp9652 audio card. With the release of kde4 and phonon I have been able to set jack as the default connection for phonon meaning kde4 apps don't need to have jack support to work with jack! Problem is kdenlive (well the opensuse rpm anyway) seems to have neither jack nor phonon support.
Will it be coming soon?
Thanks Solv |

MLT does the multimedia handling and is not a KDE-specific technology. MLT already has some support for Jack, but it needs a little more work to enable it as an audio output method. Currently, MLT is using SDL for the audio output API. It would be very convenient if SDL provides a phonon option like it already does to switch between OSS, ALSA, ESD, etc. It also makes sense for kdenlive to respect the audio device selection in KDE. So, phonon support might come, but it is not real high priority. Any additional work on Jack support will also include Jack transport synchronization, which is more interesting that indirectly using it through phonon. Perhaps improving Jack support is more valuable that integrating phonon.

Absolutely. I think kdenlive would be the first nle to be able to sync with jack, a major plus if I might say so, as a fulltime ardour user I can tell you now this is something that many other ardour/linux users have been waiting for! Currently xjadeo does a great job at syncing video to jack, but the clip must be completed - so it's limited. With ardour 3.0 coming sometime this year with midi composition support, films could be created entirely with open source tools =) I hadn't understood how mlt worked behind the scenes there with kdenlive - so I can see how it's not really something you can make happen easily. JACK support would definitely be the more important one to work towards. |
