some questions from a new user

Mon Mar 09, 2009 2:26 pm

Hi All,

I'm using Suse Linux now for years. For video editing however I stil had Windows and Avid Liquid on a seprate partition.

Using Linux for video editing is a long time dream as is an easy and intuitive program to do it. Kdenlive now seems to be ready for a challenge and I want to give it a serious try!

I have been playing with Kdenlive (on Suse 11.1) now for a while and really pleased with what it can do already. There are a couple of things that are not clear to me yet and off course I have some questions. I hope somebody can explain:

- Does Kdenlive have some like 'background rendering'? Most programs I've worked with use something like that to render transitions or effects on the timeline for smooth playback. This is especially usefull on not-so-fast computers.

- Do the project-settings effect playback? (what do the project-settings do?)

- Is there a (easy) way to use 'proxy editing' (editing with an intermediate low-res format and using HDV only for the output render)?

- Is it possible to change setting for the Project Tree Window to use more columns and only thumbnails (so more clips can be viewed at one time)?

- When I apply new mark-in and mark-out to a clip in the Clip Monitor and I drag it from the Clip Monitor to the timeline the new 'in' and 'out' are used. When I drag the same clip from the Project Tree the new 'in' and 'out' are not used and the whole clip is inserted. Is this correct?

Thanks for any help!

Cheers,

Peter
