H264 - Should I convert to DNxHD?

Thu Dec 17, 2009 2:53 am
I've got a shiny new Canon t1i that takes great video at 1280x720 30fps.

When run a clip through ffmpeg I get:

Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 6000.00 (6000/1) -> 30.00 (30/1)
Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'MVI_0085.MOV':
Duration: 00:18:09.30, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 27441 kb/s
Stream #0.0(eng): Video: h264, yuv420p, 1280x720, 26733 kb/s, 30 tbr, 3k tbn, 6k tbc
Stream #0.1(eng): Audio: pcm_s16le, 44100 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 705 kb/s

minor_version : 537331968
compatible_brands: qt CAEP

I've read a lot in these forums about converting .mts files to DNxHD. Do I need DNxHD as an intermediate format for h264? If so, is there also a problem with pcm?

IOW, do I need to do this for each clip:

ffmpeg -i my.MOV -vcodec dnxhd -acodec copy -r 30 my.mp4

Probably not. A lot of H.264 in MOV/MP4 edits quite nicely, even at 720. You'll have to just try and see. The advanced features of H.264 used in AVCHD and its TS container are a particularly challenging combination, which is where DNxHD is still recommended.
