When I import stills into KDEnlive it does the logical thing and scales to the "Shortest" resolution IE for a picture from a digital stills camera it will put black bars down the side so as not to crop any image information ...

Is there any internal setting that I can use to crop the image to 16x9 without having run all the images through the GIMP first ?

Apply the Crop effect.
