Upgrading graphics card - which are appropriate for AVCHD video?

Hi!

I have a ubuntu system with a GeForce 9500 GT graphics card. On this, I can edit and work with the AVCHD-video from my HD-cam, but it is not very smooth for editing (takes time to load, difficult to scroll etc). I'm now planning to upgrade - but does that help? Any experiences of cards working better? Is the GTX 560 a good choice? And does SLI play into this in some way....?

Of course, an option is to transcode, but that is both time consuming and space demanding (there's a lot of video, family and home stuff). So now I'm exploring the upgrade path.

Any experiences and suggestions warmly welcome.

I use the proxy feature in kdenlive which is incredible.

It converts high res avchd footage to a workable format (will work on any machine!). This low quality footage can be used when editing, but when rendering, kdenlive will use the original clips.

Superb feature, which makes editing a dream now, recommend you check it out

Hi Magnus,

but you are using VDPAU at the moment, aren't you? Because that made the biggest difference for me, and it should work with your card.
Yes, searching through the clips is still far from perfect. But as far as I know, upgrading the graphics card won't help much in that case. I asked about the bottleneck before, and I was told that it was more the software lacking the ability to really use multiple cores in an efficient way (if I understood correctly).

Cheers,

@magnusl The 560 GTX is great, The Witcher 2 runs absolutely smooth on it, with all settings to high!

I suggest you to use proxy clips as well though. It will make editing faster in any case, and secondly you need less power (lower bill) when editing for a long time :)
