Loading more then 1 thumbnail is incredibly slow. Most times it freezes while loading the 2nd thumbnail. I made quite a few changes at once. Upgraded to 11:10 and upgraded kdenlive to 8.2. I've tried removing the config files and letting Kden rebuild them, but the results are the same.

I had a problem like this a week or so ago when trying to load an old project. Kdenlive wanted to re-build all the thumbnails and went on and on and wouldn't stop. So, I re-started kdenlive and turned off audio and video thumbnails in the Timeline menu. The project loaded fine, so I re-checked the thumbnails in the menu and it worked ok.
This may not be related but it's worth a try. |

yes same here older projects as well have caused problems, with wrong images on thumbnails, thumbnail generation delaying proxy building everything just sits there waiting for proxies whilst thumbs build, then disabling thumbs and reenabling later causes problems again.
I've basically left kdenlive running over night to sort its self out after opening a bigger project for it to update all the thumbnails and proxies. But have noticed a big slow down opening and getting access to the Project Tree, relative to size of project but at least latest builds give messages to say whats going on. Not much help to you but you're not alone. :-) |

One thing I didn't say was that I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 so it's not just 11.10
I haven't yet tried to open that older project again so I must give it a go. |

I tried to fix these issues for the upcoming 0.8.2.1 version of Kdenlive. Could you test the latest development version, available from sunab's experimental PPA to let me know if this issues are fixed:
https://launchpad.net/~sunab/+archive/kdenlive-svn I need some feedback on the work I did to fix the project loading issues... |

It loaded the first two files great, then after that it started choking, to the point of nearly stopping. A couple of things, something is happening with the time it shows for the clips. The 2nd clip is showing a time of 26 hours instead of 26 minutes. Closing kdenlive and re-opening it does not seem to reset the speed of creating thumbnails. Once it starts loading slow, only a reboot will speed up again.
BTW - This is after upgrading to the SVN version. |

Using latest svn downloaded this morning.
Load old project (54min in length) contains jpg, video and audio. Load with both thumbnails checked - Will not stop loading thumbs Load with just video thumbs - Loads fine. Load with just audio thumbs - Will not stop loading. Load with just video thumbs (ok) then enable audio and the following visible:- Audio channel(s) thumbs appear immediately - video thumbs appear immediately but only up to 23 mins into the project. Attempts at loading goes on and on until I disable audio thumbs, then after some seconds it stops. I do hope that makes some sense. |

hi j-b-m, thanks for all your effort on this.
Loading an older project I don't see any thumbnails or building of, on initial loading, maybe they are being made in the background ready, kdenlive seems to generate the proxies first? I preferred the older method where the thumbnails are available for each clip quickly, so I could begin editing / in & outs for sub clips, dragging clips onto the time line etc whilst proxies were being generated in the background ready for playback and tighter editing. With hundreds of clips waiting for the proxies is a bit of a problem. As it stands the until all the proxies are generated I don't appear to be able to do anything, dragging a clip onto the time line when it doesn't have a proxies gives me warning sounds and a message that the clip isn't ready so really for the first however long kdenlive is just being something like Red Giant Grinder proxy maker, a separate interface like for transcode would surfice for that sort of operation. Once the proxies are made though the thumbs appear really quickly which is great. :-) Sorry for the negative re proxies. I really appreciate the speed of work / bug fixing. **EDIT** Another older project, if I load an older project and disable proxies for all clips whilst they are beginning generation, thumbs build, but then whilst thumbs are building if I change the proxy profile and select all in the tree and re enable proxies for all clips applying the alternative proxy profile, when the thumbnails finish building the proxies don't start and all have waiting proxy against them. :-( Additionally I notice that if I use Ctrl A in the project tree to select all clips, then tick the proxy box, applying the build proxies to every clip, it doesn't actually select all of them only the first half of the list, the second half of the list remain unticked and again non build proxies. :-( If I then select all clips and disable proxys for them, then select one clip in the tree and tick proxy box, then save the project and close it, on reopening the dialogue says 1 proxy clip missing, which is correct in this case, but the thumbnail is missing, it was there previously and Waiting proxy stays on, no proxy is built, nor thumbnail for the clip either. :-( Disabling proxy for the clip with missing thumbnail immediately provides the thumbnail. |

Thanks for your feedback. But now I really need to know which version you are using for your tests.
@Normcross, you talk about latest svn? Are you talking about sunab's svn PPA? If so, please add the package version in your reports. @Yellow, same comment. If you are compiling from git, please give the revision (can be found using "git log -n 1"), if using build script, the git revision should be displayed in the About Kdenlive dialog. I committed a few fixes last night to git that are not yet in sunab's experimental PPA. |

For me I'm using sunabs kdenlive svn PPA always.
ffmpeg on my system is: ffmpeg version git-2011-11-13-46eae15, Copyright (c) 2000-2011 the FFmpeg developers built on Nov 13 2011 23:10:29 with gcc 4.6.1 configuration: --prefix=/usr/local --enable-shared --enable-libmp3lame --enable-gpl --enable-libfaac --enable-libvorbis --enable-pthreads --enable-libfaac --enable-libxvid --enable-x11grab --enable-libgsm --enable-libtheora --enable-libdc1394 --enable-nonfree --disable-stripping --enable-avfilter --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-version3 --enable-libx264 libavutil 51. 24. 1 / 51. 24. 1 libavcodec 53. 33. 0 / 53. 33. 0 libavformat 53. 20. 0 / 53. 20. 0 libavdevice 53. 4. 0 / 53. 4. 0 libavfilter 2. 48. 0 / 2. 48. 0 libswscale 2. 1. 0 / 2. 1. 0 libpostproc 51. 2. 0 / 51. 2. 0 I really don't want to make it difficult for bug fixing by having a moving target with regard to ffmpeg so I haven't built from git since 13th Nov, kdenlive is the only application that I'm concerned about with ffmpeg so if I should you should'nt build from git, or if the PPA provides ffmpeg I'll go to that. I don't want to make it any more difficult for you, feel guilty enough with all the proxy comments already. :-) |

Ok, then I want your feedback on the next update to sunab's PPA which will contain fixes that might fix most of the proxy problems described by yellow, and a fix for video thumbnails that were created several times on document loading.

@j-b-m, Updated this evening and I'm sorry to say the problem still exists.
Still carries on trying to build thumbs. Turn off audio thumbs and the project loads fine. kdenlive 0.8.3+git20111121-23.3f792a87-0ubuntu0~sunab~maverick1 mlt 0.7.7+git20111121.8cfe7773-0ubuntu0~sunab~maverick1 |

@normcross: I just rewrote audio thumbnails threading, might improve the situation and make things a bit faster. Will sadly not be in sunab's next update, I committed too late, but it should be in sunab's friday update.
