Dropframe timeline, HD and NTSC/PAL

Sat Aug 27, 2011 6:39 am
Hi there,

I'm curious sbout the timeline - it's in dropframe, but I thought DF timecode was something particular to NTSC 29.97 (?)...
How does this relate (or not) to a 24 (or 23.976) fps project? Are there plans to add various TC options to the timeline?

Also, rendering options exist for NTSC and PAL, but isn't 1080p HD "NTSC Compatible", and not actually NTSC? Does this imply
need for another option besides just NTSC and PAL?

Thanks,
WR

Yes, dropframe timecode is particular to NTSC framerate. What makes you say the timeline is always in dropframe regardless of framerate as you appear to claim?

Please ignore the NTSC/PAL option in the Render dialog. It should not be there. Pretend it does not exist, do not touch it, and the render framerate must follow the project settings framerate.

I'm in a 23.976 HD project, timeline is reading dropframe TC...just wondering if that's the intended behavior, thanks
(actually...I don't know what the TC format truly is, but the timeline and preview window labels imply dropframe due to semicolons before the frame position)

ok, yah, I see...incrementing the cursor position manually shows the count flipping over after frame 23...maybe the semicolons shouldn't be on the labels in 23.976...(?) or am I missing something...

Any non-integral framerate requires the dropframe technique to prevent timecode drifting off from the true duration. So, it makes sense to have dropframe with 23.976 as well. With traditional dropframe for NTSC, timecode jumps from 00:01:59;29 to 00:02:0;02, but not in Kdenlive for some reason. It might be using some generic algorithm that does not follow the established pattern.

The NTSC/PAL thing has already been removed for the next release.
