I've been using Kdenlive on a pretty powerful computer (Nvidia GTS250 graphics card and 4gb ram) but I'm stuck using the proprietary video drivers in kdenlive. The program will only run with X11 or XVideo drivers selected, and neither seem to be better than the other. Video editing in the Windows side of the computer is fluid but unfortunately it lags in Ubuntu 10.10
Any tips for getting Kedenlive to utilize my video card for processing? |

You can search around here for the info about VDPAU to try to improve H.264 decoding, but that is all there is at the moment to take advantage of your video card for processing. I am not entirely sure which mlt packages (Ubuntu's or sunab's PPA) enable VDPAU. Actually, I think neither. Maybe sunab can answer if he see this. On a higher end desktop, you will not notice much gain with VDPAU anyways. Basically, it is what is is, and do not try to edit AVCHD directly, which has significant seek performance issues unrelated to actual video decoding. See other posts here about transcoding (or using proxies for the next release).

Thanks for the reply. It's worth noting that I've only tried working with *.mts files...maybe that has something to do with it?

yes, mts is AVCHD, which has the performance problem on seeking.

Thanks for the help! I should have mentioned that in my initial post but I was convinced it had to be hardware.
As far as finishing the project I'm working on, should I just tough it out and deal with the lag issues or would there be a way to convert all the files I'm working with and not lose my work in Kdenlive? |
