Kdenlive for commercial uses?

Fri Apr 29, 2011 4:48 am
Hay all, I really love the Linux OS and its programs, I'm a commercial/video producer and saw this and was amazed! So I'm wondering, is this allowed to be used for commercial uses free? Or do I have to pay? I cant seem to find anything anywhere that says anything on the matter... so any help would be awsome. Thanks in advance guys!

Yes you can. You are free to use Kdenlive whatever way you like.
It is open source and licensed under GPL v2.

Kdenlive is GNU software, so you can do anything with it, except hide it's source code, or a modified version of it.

You can legally download it for free and use it for any purpose.

You can even redistribute or sell kdenlive itself, as long as you provide the source.

The only thing which could make problems are non-free video formats like H264. Kdenlive will generate them, but if your work turns out a blockbuster, MPEG-LA might come with a bill...

Kdenlive can, of course, render to free formats too. In that case you are perfectly free in your creativity - even if you do produce a blockbuster, you don't owe nothing to anybody!
