Where is the documentation?

Thu Jun 30, 2011 5:59 am
Hi,

I am quite new to Kdenlive and to video editing but I have some experience with open source projects so I am familiar with some of the difficulties you might face.

I wonder where is the documentation? When clicking on "Help -> Kdenlive Helpbook" in the application I get to user manual but that seems to be both very limited and outdated. Is that it or have I missed the main documentation?

A couple of things just from the top of my head that I am unclear of:

- What is the meaning of a "profile"? How does it affect the editing and the rendering.
- Is there a way to create new profiles?
- What is the meaning of the different rendering options?
- How to combine two videos that have different fps and size? (e.g. a screencast + a webcam view of the speaker)

Our new manual will be located here:
http://userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manual
The structure is already set and some short texts are written.
Feel free to contribute!

- What is the meaning of a "profile"? How does it affect the editing and the rendering.

You choose profiles based on what kinds of video you will be using, if you are not sure, drag a clip into a new project and kdenlive will generally ask if you want to change the profile to match the clips settings. I am not sure exactly how profiles effect things, I do know if you select one with different FPS to your clips, then this will cause problems when editing, as kdenlive will assume the video clips have more/less FPS than they actually have (I think)

- Is there a way to create new profiles?

I would guess so, not sure how though!

- What is the meaning of the different rendering options?

The render outputs to all different formats and qualities, choosing one depends on where the output video will be going, YouTube or DVD for example. If you are not sure, then choose a quality and format similar to that of your input clips.

- How to combine two videos that have different fps and size? (e.g. a screencast + a webcam view of the speaker)

I have thrown all sorts of clips into kdenlive and they all mix fine, so this is possible. If you experience problems though, you could convert them all to a common format first
