Dear forum,

I recently purchased a JVC Camcorder, it is set 1920 x 1080 50fps.
Kdenlive reports that there is no profile existing.
I can put a clip on the timeline but when trying to watch and edit it works stuttering and very slow.
The computer i use is a desktop pc (Medion) with Intel i5 quad core processor and a Nvidia GT240 graphics card, VDPAU drivers are in use on my Ubuntu 10.04 system.
This computer is also equipped with Windows 7, i rarely use it but i had to check if the video clips on my camera also stutter with Win7.
To my surprise all the video clips run very smoothly with the standard video editing tool from MS, you can drag the slider while playing anywhere on the timeline and it does it directly and smoothly.
With Kdenlive when i drag the slider to another point in the timeline it takes about 5 seconds for anything to happen.
Are there more people here on the forum who have the same experiences?
I it possible to implement a 1080P 50fps profile in Kdenlive?
Thanks for any support as i like to keep on using my favorite OS and Kdenlive.

Patrick,

Are they 50i clips? If so, kdenlive does complain about the wrong profile, but it is safe to ignore it, this needs fixing in the future. The profile to use is 1080i 25fps (I think that is how it is presented)

Under Ubuntu, I cannot play AVCHD MTS clips smoothly and experience the same issues as you, I have an i7 and 6GB of RAM! I use proxy clips to get around this problem, not sure why Windows handles this better.

Moorsey,

In the profiles i cannot find a profile with 50fps, i can find 1080i and 1080p with 25, 29,xx and 30 fps.
I don't really know if this is a big problem or that it causes the stutter.
On this forum i did read about setting of proxy clips, i did switch it on but it makes no difference to my experience, is there something extra that i can do with the proxy settings?

When i play a AVCHD MTS clip with Ubuntu and the VLC-videolan player the video runs smoothly but now and then when i grab the slider and move it a couple of minutes further the video can get distorted and lines get ripped apart, this also is not an issue under Win7 where you can get away with all kinds of tricks without a distorted picture.

I will try the 1080I 25fps profile and see if this gives an improvement.

Thank you for your reply!

If you are using 1080i this will be 50 interlaced frames per second, which is effectively 25 full frames per second, so that is why there is no 50 fps profile, the 1080i 25fps is the one to go for.

You can enable proxy clips in different ways. Either enable it on a new project, then every clip you add from then on will be processed into a proxy clip, which is a low resolution version of your clip, these can take a few minutes to generate. Then you can work with these low res clips in the timeline, which is nice and fast, but when the final project to rendered, the original clips are used, so you get a full quality output.

The other way to enable proxy clips, on a project already in progress for example, is to right click on a clip you have added and tick "proxy clip", this will generate a proxy for that clip. It is of course easier to have it enabled for a new project, so all clips are converted to proxys

Hope that helps

I enabled the proxy clips via project/project settings and switched on proxy clips but i did not activate "generate for videos larger then"
It takes some time but then indeed it is better to edit the video so this is a fine solution for the stuttering video problem, but one difference still is that the perfomance of editing is still not a smooth experience, i hope in the future that the smooth feel you get with win7 will be the same in linux.
I know that this is a project in development and i thank all the people working on this great program and i hope it will outperform competitor programs on the Windows platform.

Also i changed the settings in project settings to 1080i 25fps for rendering the video, this should work fine.

Odd that you would still be having issues, with a good system, mine is smooth when using proxy clips, how much RAM do you have?

I don't use VDPAU, so not sure if that changes anything.

There is an experimental feature in latest kdenlive to enable multi CPU usage when editing, can't remember off hand, it is set in "environment" under user preferences. Might be worth trying it out, try setting it to 2/3

Hi Wally80,

What you need to do for AVCHD clips is enable Proxy clips. If you read moorsey's mail above (Sat, 07/02/2011 - 09:46) it is explained there.
