I highly mis shift click to select multiple clips on timeline. Control click to accumulate selection is very time consuming, so I am almost sure I am missing something.
How do I select a large part of the timeline at once?

You can shift click but you have to start the click outside the clips, at an empty space in the timeline, and then drag a box selection over the clips.
