Is it at all possible to render footage - in between - on the time line?
I do not want to create a (test) file every time I want to render...My laptop has difficulties processing
the footage on the time line, and it might help to render during work in progress right?

Have you tried using proxy clips?

With proxy clips on my machine, my PC can render most footage "live" in the timeline.

Another option would be to just select the bit you want to preview and then render selection, rather than the whole project
