I have a few VOB:s that I import into kdenlive, cut and paste between them (same with their sound tracks), simply combine them into something I would like to export as a new VOB. All of the imported VOB:s have same resolution and as I understand, it should be possible to perform the editing I mentioned without any encoding taking place. Is this true? If yes, what do I need to do before rendering the project so that the original video/audio quality is preserved?

It seems to me that by simply choosing the DVD/PAL as the output format encodes the output file, which I am trying to avoid.

Kdenlive does not support smart rendering. So Kdenlive will always render the complete timeline. Avidemux may be an alternative for you in this case (so I have read in this forum, never used it).

What about Gopchop http://gopchop.sourceforge.net/ for this kind of hacking.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I will try out Gopchop (seems as though it was a while ago it was updated) and see what it can do for me.
Ideally, I am looking for a video editor that has the same functionallity as kdenlive when it comes to multi audio/video track editing/combining. I need to combine some of the footages from the imported VOB:s, for instance, here is my workflow in kdenlive (+ re-encoding I'm trying to avoid):

I import two VOB:s and split the video and audio, then say I want to use first 10 seconds of audio/video from VOB1 and the the rest of the audio/video from VOB2. I do this by cutting the first 10 seconds of audio/video from VOB2 (after having aligned the VOB:s in time space). Then I just export the whole thing as DVD/PAL (with re-encoding).

The most important thing for me is to be able to work with both of the VOB:s in parallell, so that I can align the cut/edit points. This is simple from within a GUI, such as kdenlive. Avidemux does have this ability, but the cutting and pasting between the two VOB:s loaded in their separate Avidemux instances feels cumbersome. Otherwise, Avidemux look as though it does exactly what I need, but only when one need to edit/cut a single VOB. Did I understood it correctly?

Any more tips?
