If you only have HDV as an option, then try installing libavformat-extra. What version of kdenlive & MLT you're using and distro and install method.

Also check that you don't have "render selected zone" option selected in the render dialog

libavformat-extra is part of the libav / ffmpeg tool chain which MLT and kdenlive use for providing and handling access to codecs and formats.
You can install it via Software Center or Synaptic or via the CLI with apt-get install. |

After you installed libacformat-extra did you see more render options like h264?
You may need to run kdenlives config again or delete the kdenliverc file in your home directory/.kde/share/config, I think thats the path or there abouts, the .kde folder is hidden by default so you may need to 'Show Hidden Files' in your file manager. To get 0.9.6 you can use sunabs PPA I'd suggest the 'stable' PPA rather than the 'svn' PPA. You suggest you're rumning 0.9.6 already? How had you installed that? It might be a problem with a library incompatibility. |

Ok, no problem, so how did you install 0.9.6? Was it via sunabs PPA? If not you could try the 'stable' PPA and see if it resolves your problem.
