I was hoping the latest version of Kdenlive would improve its performance. However, it is impossible to do editing. I can copy a video to the Project Bin BUT when I drag it to the Timeline, Kdenline freezes and nothing works. I have tried purging and re-installing, removing the kdenline directory in my home account. None of this fixes the problem .
I have to complete video editing in the next few days and it is critical that this be done. I am doing this work on Kubuntu Wily 15.10 which is due for release on the 22nd October. I have two computers with Wily and both behave the same with Kdenlive. I very much suspect that this problem relates to the developers overlooking compilation errors as I find it hard to believe that this problem was not encountered by those working on this package. At this stage I see my options as: (1) try and revert to the previous version - I have not been able to do this and I would like to know how this can be done. (2) wait and hope the developers find what is wrong in the build process and fix it in the next day or two. (3) remove Wily from my laptop and install Trusty Tahr as I know its version works. |

There is a fourth option: get the Kfenlive sources from git, pick an older release tag, and compile. There's a good description in the Kdenlive wiki, for compiling Kdenlive on KF5. I was able to compile Kdenlive myself on Kubuntu 15.04. Please also note the discussion page with additional notes.

I decided to see what happened when I ran kdenlive from the konsole. This is what I got up to the point where kdenlive hangs and I exit.

I have the same issue on Arch Linux with 15.08.02. Downgrading to 15.08.01 solves the issue. You can find old packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/.
The difference in the command line output is that the buggy version has this:

I am pleased to report that today on Kubuntu 15.10, the latest build arrived and it is now working very well as a video editor . Thanks very much to those who fixed up the build of Kdenlive 15.08.2

wily is also following the Debian switch from libav to ffmpeg, I suspect the resolution of your problem comes from here... just to thank the ones who deserve it

The Kubuntu 'fix' was, by claydoh - https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthrea ... post380698:
Ubuntu package is: kdenlive 4:15.08.2.1~really15.08.1-0ubuntu2 |

I doubt that messing with version idents is one of the greatest ideas here . I'm glad I jumped ship and am compiling Kdenlive now right from the sources...

Not everyone has the time, patience, or desire to have to do that. The distro developers reverting the version that is in the repos back to a working version is not an unreasonable thing to do.

I thought so too. Then I tried and it was maybe fifteen minutes of easy work, just following the instructions. When I compare this to the time trying to figure out repository issues, the self-compilation won by a clear margin. Of course, your mileage may vary. But then, I wanted to get my ShuttlePro jogdial working again, so I had to go the source route. But please don't dismis the source option easily as I don't have time for this. If you can wait for the distro or 3rd party ppa to pick up fixes, that's fine. If you can't, as in my case with Kubuntu 15.04 with the KF5 backports ppa, then there simply is no suitable Kdenlive ppa available. In my situation, self-compilation is a quick and easy solution. |
