I got lubuntu lts to check out 0.9.6. There are hard to see dots but you can just use the whole vertical space above the timeline (which I'm afraid is 2-4 pixels high only. This video demonstrates it: https://youtu.be/r5VMO-4wsxw

The only solution is a new start of the PC.

Try ESC key or Alt+F4.
