But I dunno which version you should choose to work on your version of Mint. Mint is ubuntu based - but what version of ubuntu?

Mint 17.3 / Ubuntu 14.4 (LTS) don't provide the KDE Frameworks 5; backporting all these (with recent Qt5) is really too much work
=> for Kdenlive 15.x releases you need to upgrade your distro (maybe in a chroot or VM if you prefer)

Thanks for the info. Really my old version of kdenlive works pretty good, so I'll just keep using it.
