Sticky selection tool cursor

Fri Jan 29, 2016 6:07 pm
Had problems with application icons after switching from Kdenlive 0.9.6 and Xubuntu 14.04 to a fresh install of Xubuntu 15.10, Kdenlive 15.12 from the sunab release repository. Also had problems moving the select tool cursor to the mouse pointer position. Upgrading to Kdenlive 15.13.0 from the svn repository corrected most of the missing icons and buttons but the select tool cursor problem remains. Sometimes it snaps to the mouse position. Most times it does not. Makes precise cuts VERY difficult.

What happens is I click at another position on the time line and I see a highlight on the timeline markers only. The cursor does not move to the new position until I hit play in the project monitor.

Is this a known bug? Are there any workarounds?

Re: Sticky selection tool cursor

Again I solved my own problem. My computer has an Intel i5-760, 8GB RAM. Video card is a Maxwell based nVidia GTX 750 Ti. In Settings/Configure Kdenlive/Playback enabling GPU processing fixes the cursor problem. Not sure how it impacts any other operations yet. Will keep playing and reporting.

EDIT: GPU processing is a catch 22. Fixes the cursor movement on projects that were made with older Kdenlive. Causes a crash every time I try to add any clips to a new project. GPU processing disabled I can add new clips without crashing, can't get the Selection tool cursor to follow mouse pointer.

{sigh}

EDIT #2: Okay, I have found a workaround that I believe can help coders zero in on the root problem (pun intended). The problem again is, when I start a new project, add a clip to the project bin then drag it to the timeline or open an existing project, I am unable to get the Selection Tool cursor to follow the mouse pointer. This affects both Clip Monitor and Project Monitor. Each one, Clip Monitor and Project Monitor, must be freed up separately. They are independent of one another. The following steps free up the Selection Tool cursor in each and it stays freed up for the remainder of the editing session.

1) Start Kdenlive, add a clip to the Project Bin, drag it to the timeline. (Trying to set the Selection Tool cursor does not work)
2) Click the Project Monitor tab in the preview frame.
3) Click Play then pause. (This step cannot be omitted)
4) Move mouse pointer to a free space in the Project bin frame and click on that free space.
5) Click on and select the clip again in the Project bin.
6) Click on free space in the Project bin deselecting the clip again.

Selection tool cursor is now free to move, but only for the Project Monitor. To free up the selection tool cursor for Clip Monitor:

1) Select the clip in Project bin.
2) Make sure the Clip Monitor tab is selected in the preview frame.
3) Click Play then Pause.
4) Deselect by clicking on free space in project bin, then reselect the clip again.

Cursor is now free to move in the Clip Monitor frame.

This pertains to the svn build as of 1/29/2016 (v15.13.0), Xubuntu 15.10, Intel i5-760, nVidia GTX 750 Ti, driver 352.63. Also, attempting to change the project selected clip Zone causes the sticky cursor problem to return one more time until it is freed up one last time using the Project Monitor procedure above.

I really hope this helps.

Okay, I'm feeling just a bit dumb. My problem was explained by this nice fellow here viewtopic.php?f=265&t=122140#p350533
I was running 3 processing threads in environment thinking it would help with rendering speed rather than editing speed. Set it back to 1 and bamm! Problem solved.

Still, I believe the workaround I found while using 3 threads can help lead the devs to a permanent fix. There seems to be a race condition happening until we manually place all our ducks in a row. Then they stay in line until the next editing session.
