I have whatever sized input files I happen to have, and I want to get a specific output resolution. For simplicity let's say I want PAR=1, so DAR becomes output-width/output-height. How can I accomplish this?
Let's say my source is 1920x1080 and I want to output 720x540 (DAR 4:3) by cropping the sides. I figured out that I can make a PAR 1 project like HD 1080p, and add a Crop, Scale and Position with a Scale of 67 (should actually be 66.66666..., but this field does not allow decimals) to stretch it to how a 720x540 with DAR 16:9 would be, and a suitable Tilt value to center the video. Then in the Render dialog I Rescale to 720x540 and it apparently forces the PAR to 1 (which happens to be convenient in this particular case). Now, it's both inefficient and imprecise to resize the picture back and forth like this, and it also makes it impossible to apply filters to the final 720x540 output before encoding it. So, please say there's a better way of doing this. If not, maybe it would be possible to add a feature like "Custom project profile with manually specified size and PAR/DAR"? Surely I'm not the first one to want to crop a video to some arbitrary sized output. |
