I can confirm that using a stable FFmpeg build from https://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ (in my case I picked version: 3.4.2, architecture: Windows 64-bit, linking: Shared) instead of the nightly build (https://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win64 ... shared.zip) linked in the instructions on the download page (https://kdenlive.org/download/) fixed the "unsupported video codec: libx264" error when rendering project as .mp4.

I don't think deleting the AppData folders mentioned by some here are necessary.

Environment:
  • OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
  • Kdenlive version: 17.12.0-w64

This is a very OLD post,a and right now you can't use anymore this kind of solution...
you have just to
remove any older release of kdenlive an related temporary files: viewtopic.php?f=269&t=172868
download latest build for Windows (installer) : https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Kden ... 64-gcc.exe

and there are no more issues like that.

Try this one: https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Kdenlive_Nightly_mingw64/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/ and select the file you need or prefer (ZIP or EXE)

What does your About Kdenlive window say about MLT and FFmpeg?
Where do the MLT environment paths point to (check Settings > Configure Kdenlive > Environment > MLT environment)?

Can you also post a screenshot of the render window with More Options enabled?

That's an older version. IIRC, ffmpeg is on 4.4 now

I found an older post on subreddit for kdenlive where Arkengheist fixed this problem by checking "Bypass codec verification" in the settings and clicking on edit profile, cloking ok and all is good. The thread is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kdenlive/comments/hs6xeb/unsupported_video_codec_libx264_libx265_and_audio/. Granted, it was for an older version of kdenlive but it may work for you.

Thanks for the screenshots. Actually, I was looking for the parameters for the MP4 render profile ;-)

Did you restart kdenlive after checking Bypass? And in the render dialog select the profile you want to use, click Edit and click Ok. That's how Arkengheist fixed it for her.

Also turn off Parallel processing.

The difference to my kdenlive installation is that MLT environment points to C:/Program Files/kdenlive/bin whereas yours point to C:/Users/<user_name>/AppData

Just wondering why ...

i don't know why... As i have said early i have download and installed this build ' 'kdenlive-master-956-windows-mingw_64-gcc.exe'' from https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Kden ... /artifact/.

i have also Kdenlive standalone version installed on my pc and still have the same issue with this one.

Thanks for your help

OK, please use the INSTALLER version of kdenlive (and not the standalone) execute the installer using rightmouse button an selecting "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" use the default folder for installation ( PROGRAM FILES /etc..) .. and not to choice another folder or an user folder like APPDATA (this is an application and need to be placed on program files)

at the end look at the FFMPEG position (need to be placed on a PROGRAM FILES sub folder)

Image

Also make sure to not have an aggressive antivirus that will sandbox the ffmpeg.exe or other Kdenlive files (if you can please disable it for a while)

Thanks @bartoloni, please see below when i try to install in "C:\Program Files\" i got the error below, when I click on "yes" or "no" the same window appears and if "Cancel" the installation quit or fail.

Note also i had used your batch program see above the topic to uninstall kdenlive files before doing the install.
