I tried everything (clicked and right clicked on clip, effects etc.) but can't find a delete function for the effects I added to a clip. How can I delete them?

Also, there seems to be no way to change the properties of an added effect.

Have you selected 'Effects' from the View menu? Selecting each clip will reveal the effects for that clip and allow you to change their properties or delete.
