I got the 'invalid clip' error when trying to edit a .wmv file and dug around and figured out that I need the correct version of ffmpeg. However, I have no idea how to do that. Are there any instructions for that?
Using this on windows 10, not sure what else you might need. Just downloaded kdenlive today and the installation page said: "Now, you don’t need to do anything more to set up. To run Kdenlive, you just have to unzip the downloaded Kdenlive version, and start Kdenlive from kdenlive.exe in kdenlive-windows folder." |

Hi Trisha!
I responded to your post on our Meetup forums (https://www.meetup.com/St-Louis-Online-Video-Creators/messages/boards/thread/51676335), but I wanted to respond here for the general KDE/Kdenlive community as well. Like you quoted in your post, the latest version of Kdenlive for Windows shouldn't require a separate FFmpeg installation. I recently tried Kdenlive on a Windows computer at work, and I experienced the same issue you're having with the "clip is invalid" error. When I had that problem, I was trying to drag files from Windows Explorer into Kdenlive. I found that if I clicked the "Add Clip" button in the Project Bin, I could successfully add media to the project. Furthermore, after I had added a clip using the button, dragging from Windows Explorer seemed to start working. So, like I said, I suspect this isn't an FFmpeg setup problem but actually an unrelated bug. We can try and confirm that by having you go to Settings -> Configure Kdenlive and going to the Environment section, and telling us what you see in the text boxes under "MLT environment." (I don't remember if the boxes were pre-filled with the FFmpeg/FFplay/FFprobe locations, or if they were empty and Kdenlive defaults to using executables in the same directory it's located in. I don't have a Windows box at home to test that. If they're empty, you can try selecting the file locations manually. Let us know if you need help doing that.) |

Thanks! They are filled in but kind of greyed out. But I'm able to select and copy the text:
C:/Users/trish/Documents/Kdenlive-18.04.1d-w64/Kdenlive-18.04.1/ffmpeg.exe C:/Users/trish/Documents/Kdenlive-18.04.1d-w64/Kdenlive-18.04.1/ffplay.exe C:/Users/trish/Documents/Kdenlive-18.04.1d-w64/Kdenlive-18.04.1/ffprobe.exe C:/Users/trish/Documents/Kdenlive-18.04.1d-w64/Kdenlive-18.04.1/share/mlt/profiles/ C:/Users/trish/Documents/Kdenlive-18.04.1d-w64/Kdenlive-18.04.1/melt.exe processing threads is 1 |

Hi
I have the same problem with WIN10 cannot load any type of video clip, each time t just says invalid clip and then have no option but to click ok thereafter the clip is deleted. I have tried the installation of an earlier ffmpeg as recommended by other responses to this problem. And the deleted the newer ffmpeg files and replaced them with the earlier ones that generally end with 57 instead 58. Also looked in the settings/ environment but seems that the selections are white text on white background so cant see anything. This program looks really promising but cant get it to work on Win 10. any help much appreciated? |

kevint, mine is working now - jacobgkau was able to fix it for me in person since he lives near me and we were at a meetup together. I have no idea how he fixed it.

maybe you have an old configuration file from a previous version of Kdenlive. |

For the record, I was able to get Trisha's working by going into the environment settings and selecting the .exe's for FFmpeg et al manually. Even though they were already set, manually setting them again seemed to do the trick.

Hi,
I apologize for the contribution, but I will include it on this topic. The Kdenlive directory contains ffmpeg, ffplay, ffprobe files with a total size of approximately 650 kB. If I replace them with files downloaded from ffmpeg pages (approx. 282 MB), will I make a difference? Kdenlive works with both variants. Thanks for the information |

Just to confirm, I was also able to fix this on Win10 by using the method described above. Only difference is the path to my kdenlive exeuctable folder.
This is where it turned up on my Windows computer C:/Program Files/kdenlive/bin/ffmpeg.exe Protip: Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + comma to *instantly* get to Settings/Configure Kdenlive. Then go to "Enviornment" and "MLT Environment". Then check the fields next to the list of program names such as "FFmpeg." If that file path text box is empty, your install of kdenlive can't see your install of ffmpeg. BTW, most new kdenlive downlaods include ffmpeg, etc. in them so you shouldn't have to download them separately.. unless you're doing something *weird*. From here, click the "file" icon next to each file path text box and navigate to your install directory of kdenlive. In my case above, it was "C:\Program Files\kdenlive," but someone above had it in a different location. So far I have only filled in ffmpeg.exe and I was able to import a file and convert it to my project's target format. I don't know when it becomes necessary to fill in "ffplay" and ffprobe, but I'll go try to edit the video now. A big thank you to all the developers of this fine software. |
