I upgraded my Linux installation and by default, got a newer version of KDEnlive. 17.12.3

Previously, in the time line, I could click at any position in the time line, above the tracks, and the bar used to jump to that position. I also used to be able to "drag" the playback bar around like this, which I use a lot to pinpoint segments.

Now, when I click there, a little grey mark appears and I have to quickly play/pause the project before the bar will jump there. In order to pinpoint a segment, I've now got to start playing slightly before the spot I think I need, and hope I'm right.

Can someone please tell me how I revert to the previous behaviour?

Many thanks.

Kdenlive 17.12.3 is very old and not maintained anymore.

Please try with the current Kdenlive AppImage version 19.04.1 to see if there are any packaging issues https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/

If the problem/issue doesn't occur when using the AppImage, then it's your configuration or packaging.

Thank you very much! That's got me back up and running.
