I can currently, inefficiently, do this by exporting the audio to audacity and handling it all there; but I'm wondering if it's possible to use Kdenlive's animation tools to control a pitch shift. I can't find anything with a key frame option.
This would actually be good for many audio effects, but the functionality doesn't seem to be implemented for most of them.
This might also be possible for Blender, which is a surprisingly versatile video editor; but its audio capabilities are quite limited.
I understand nothing about audio but we do have some tools to manage the pitch, however it has no key frame option, so... When I need to put an effect and it has no key frame I just cut the piece of the clip(audio) where the effect should be and apply the effect only at this small piece, I mean it works for me
I have not discovered a plugin with the + key frame function. It is possible though depending on the sort of audio. If it is simple voice and you don't want to pitch higly versatile then it can be done quite easy.
1/ by cutting the audio track to separately put a pitch on that part. 2/ automated correction with the autotalent plugin. Overal or on cut parts.
Both options are quit static. Just fixed high(er) or low(er). You can NOT set that floating from up going to down or vice versa as can be done with key framing. Option 1 can even be done on some more then audio, if it can be cut and remains editable as you wish. Option 2 can work, but can become to robotical.

I agree, but accept it. It's video software. Not audio software. But it does it's job more then enough for 'regular' video level audio. For not that huge editing i still can do it on enough professional level in Kdenlive, including lots of external plugins. Almost always more then enough for me.

If i need more professional audio editing (under a video) i grab back on DAW. Hardly ever need this. Almost always kdenlive does it. Pro vid by kdenlive, with pro audio by DAW. Full Pro workflow both together!
