hardware recommendations.

Thu Sep 29, 2022 3:21 pm
Is an extra graphics card an advantage for Kdenlive? Currently I only work with the Intel Core i7-8700k and the graphic on board and am very happy with the performance.
Question, what would a good computer for Linux look like to render Kdenlive well?
Better AMD or Intel?
Better GPU or is graphic on board enough?

Depends on which graphic card you have onboard. Which (HQ) specifications it has.
Here we use only the (good!) onboard's and no problems. Good quality video's (up to HQ full HD).

And yes. A better graphic card will do (most likely) better (if better specifications).
Mostly better cooling. Working stand alone so no interference from other hardware. Often better/quicker chipsets. But i doubt if the difference (on the not heaviest projects) will be huge if you go from HQ-onboard to HQ-extra.

Hallo zolder,
Yes, I only do HD videso, and rendering is very fast for me. Also, because my videos only take a minute, so Kdenlive only takes 1 to 2 minutes max.
Do you know if Kdenlive uses GPU acceleration like almost all other video editors? Or is an extra graphics card of no use at all with Kdenlive?

That i don't know. I saw some topic(s) passing about GPU acceleration but i myself have no experience with that.

As i said, it can be usefull in some cases ...

It's the questions how much. And whether you will notice that difference.

If it works for you and your render is good, i would say why change?

a good video card can reduce a lot "trascoding" pauses.. (if you are working on variable frame rate ... aka smartphone videos) viewtopic.php?f=272&t=175195&p=455720&hilit=transcode#p455720
