Image Duration Preset

Fri Jan 20, 2023 6:20 pm
Where do you set how long photos appear in the Timeline?
I thought that was done in Configure > Misc > Default Durations > Image clips or Image sequences.
But no matter what I set there, the photos are always 2 sec.

How do I do this correctly?

My Kdenlive is: 22.12.0 on Linux.

You got the location in the settings right. The notation for the duration is hh:mm:ss:ff, where ff is frames. For example, if you want an image sequence to consist of images displayed for 2 frames each you enter 00:00:00:02; for 2s you enter 00:00:02:00

Hello berndmj,
does this only apply to sequences of photos or also to single photos, (or to a few photos I select with the mouse) that I drag into the timeline? I thought it was, but for me the photos are always only 2 sec. long, no matter what I set. Could there be a bug there?

I have found a solution: If I want a different duration, I set it. Then I delete the photos in Project Bin and paste them there again. Then I drag them into the Timeline and the duration fits exactly.
It's like the photos already get the length assigned when you insert them into the project bin. I wonder if this is intentional.

And when I darg & drop photos from another application, they immediately get the duration that was set before.

Strange, but at least a solution.

The setting only applies to images or image sequences that are brought into the project bin. Once in there the duration is set. You can still change it by selecting the clip in the bin, go to Clip Properties, check Duration and enter the new value. Now this image clip in the bin has the new duration. But any new image brought into the bin has the duration set in Settings.

does this only apply to sequences of photos or also to single photos, (or to a few photos I select with the mouse) that I drag into the timeline?

There are separate settings for image clips (single image or several image files dragged into the bin), image sequence (specify the pattern, e.g. image_*.jpg and kdenlive will import all images as a sequence (its own clip) matching this pattern), color clips, etc.

Hello berndmj
I am amazed at what you know and I see that it is not a mistake on Kdenlive's part.

Unfortunately, changing the duration in the project bin only works for single photos and not for several at the same time - a bit of a pity.
Is there any way to lengthen or shorten the duration of multiple photos in the timeline at the same time?

Thank you very much.

Thanks for your kind words! Much appreciated.

Indeed, it is a pity that it is not possible to select several clips in the bin and change the duration. Perhaps worth a feature request at bugs.kde.org

There is a trick you may want try. It is ugly, I know, and not very practical but, hey, it may save you some clicking. So here it is: Change the duration of the first clip to what you want it to be. Then put all the other clips below it and align on the left side of the first clip. Select all the longer clips with Shift+drag and then grab the right side of one of the clips and drag it until they have the same length as the first one.

Oh, you can actually do that, a fun and very elaborate method. You mean I have to put all the following clips under the first one, each in a new track. Awesome effort, but it works.
The better method is to set the right time: e.g. 00:00:02:09. Delete all clips from the project bin, then insert them again.
Or, what is very comfortable: Add Image Sequence. Then you get a block of photos that behaves similarly to a video clip, and it can be finely zoomed in or out in time as you like (use Shift+drag with the mouse). The big disadvantage: You have no access to the single clips anymore, they are fixed.
