Digitized super 8 format

Sun Mar 19, 2023 2:47 pm
H,
A few years ago I had some super-8 films digitized in HD quality (1440x1080) with the original frame rate of 18 fps. Initially, in an older version of kdenlive, it was possible to define the project format according to the stated resolution and frame rate. After a while I picked up the threads and wanted to continue with editing those digitized films with the latest version of kdenlive and discovered to my surprise that that format of my films doesn't exist anymore. Why is that so?
My experience is that I cannot see a difference in quality between 18 fps and 24 fps however noticed a significant increase in file size. I assume I'm not the only one stuck with this problem. Or have I missed something important to get me out of this predicament?
I would be grateful for getting an explanation.

I guess you are referring to a project profile that used to be there but is not anymore. In this case why don't you create it? Or change an existing one?

Among the offered formats the closest I get to my requirements is either 1080p 24fps or 720x576 18fps. I don't see any way to adjust those formats to 1440x1080 18 fps.
Or am I missing something here? My version is 22.12.3

Go to Menu > Settings > Configure Kdenlive. In the Project Defaults tab right above the Project Settings description window click the sliders icon to Manage Project Profiles. Click on Create New Profile (by default it will create a copy of the one that is selected but you can select another one before you click the icon). Give it a new name if you like and make all the changes necessary, like frame rate etc. Done.

Edit: I forgot to add that if you change the dimensions (e.g. 1440 x 1080) make sure to change the aspect ratio as well. Very important!

Thanks a lot for your advice! I had been there before but stopped short of the last step as I missed the 'Create new profile'-button. However, now having created the profile I was looking for I'm experiencing problems with some choices there.

I'm lost with the parameters 'Field order' and 'Colorspace'. How significant are their correct definitions?

They are important but unless you know exactly what you are doing just go with what was brought over from the profile you copied or based your new one on.

I have seen a few threads out there that talk about different color spaces and their influence on how the video looks but cannot remember where. Please google it. Same for Field Order which is only important if you are dealing with interlaced footage or want to render your videos. Since most players these days handle interlaced and progressive videos equally well I would not bother.
