Portrait MP4 Proxied To Landscape

Fri Mar 24, 2023 3:37 pm
I was using a nightly build in January and raised a bug report to say a 1080x1920 (portrait) clip was proxied to 1920x1080 (landscape). After the render it was portrait.

I am saying this is critical because the proxy is not retaining the width and height.

If I say any more it will complicate things. Such as, yes, my intention was for the clip to be landscape and I would have added the Transform effect. Yes, if I had it in Icon view I could see by the thumbnail was a portrait clip.

But what if I was in list view and the thumbnail was not so obvious as was the case in January?

I have been using Kdenlive 22.12.2 for my last 13 or so renders assuming the bug was in the nightly build. It turns out it isn't it's there in the stable version. I was fortunate to have the project bin in Icon view and spotted a thumbnail in portrait. It proxied it as landscape. The render was in portrait.

I went to update the bug report and it was still in Reported stage.

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this abnormality proxying a portrait clip.

One confession. My proxy settings create files at 480x270 (to match the preview scaler).

Import it in the project.
Place it at the track.
Put the 'Position and zoom' plugin on it to correct at wish.
(word failure edited)

That's how i always do it. :)

Pan and Zoom? I've not heard of that. I use Transform.

Why is a 1080x1920 clip proxied to 1920x1080?

Sorry, said it wrong in my hurry. It's: Position and zoom.
Search the effects for 'zoom' and you'll find it.

I don't know. Can't tell from here.
Can be the direction of the video is different? Can be it's imported wrong? Can be the needed codec is not available, why another used codec importerd wrong? Can be ... a lot.

How is it handled in other video software? On the same computer?

I only use the one software, but I am tempted to try DaVinci Resolve, but I don't really want to.

I'll use a nightly build for the edit after next. As the problem is in the stable versions I might as well use a nightly one.

Thank goodness it's not just me. Looking at your video it looks like there's been changes to the Clip Properties since 22.12.2.
