Kdenlive 0.7.2.1 crashes after update to KDE 4.2

After I updated my opensuse 11.1 to KDE 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0) "release 83.1" kdenlive crashes everytime I try to add a clip in the project. It display the open file dialog, but the mouse over the file triggers the crash.

Opening a kdenlive project file works without any problems. I can open a project the video clips are loaded and I can play the file.

So I think there must be a incompatibility between a QT or KDE lib and this certain file open dialog.

Any ideas?

I compiled kdenlive with the wizzard without root install, it crashes in the same way.

On the other hand, adding clips with drag and drop works, without problems.

The same open file dialog is used by kaffeine with kde4.2 Gui is working incl. preview.

It' s really crazy, after kicking out "kde4-kdm-branding-openSUSE" and installing "kde4-kdm-branding-upstream" both installations (the packman Package and the self compiled) are working.

But I can't believe that this "kdm"-package was the reason for this. It is very clear to me that the bunch of repositories you have to use with opensuse is very confusing. So in conclusion I think the reason for this crash, was in my KDE4.2 installation. Sad but true, I was not smart enough to update KDE 4.1 to 4.2.

Hi Tom,

I couldn't believe it too. So I replaced kde4-kdm-branding-openSUSE with kde4-kdm-branding-upstream => no effect. kdenlive 0.7.2.1 (from packman) crashes randomly (continuously) under KDE 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0) "release 99". When was your last update on SuSE? Is kdenlive running fine? What packages else do you have installed from packman?

Would be grateful for any help.

Best regards, Zed.

Hi zed,

you really want a complete list of all packages I installed from packman? I have some doubts that this will help you really. The problem with kdenlive seems to be to put the matching versions of all the needed libs together. In my special case it was very clear, that I had a problem with some KDE4 libs, because kdenlive crash exactly on the mouseover event in the file open dialog. So I suppose I updated the 'not fitting' kde4 lib without recognizing with relation to my kdenlive crash.

On the other hand, my kdenlive installation is not running stable in any situation, but it is possible to use it.

Good luck

Hi Tom,

thanks for your quick answer. I have updated pretty much everything on my SuSE 11.1, but still have no luck with kdenlive 0.7.2.1 from packman. meanwhile I will check out the live DVD and if I find some time I will do a build from svn on my machine.

Best regards, Zed.

P.S. "you really want a complete list of all packages I installed from packman?" Why not? something like "rpm -qa > rpm-qa.txt" would have done the job nicely.

I'm watching this thread with interest.  I'm running openSUSE-11.1, but with KDE-3.5.10.  With some KDE-4.1.3 libraries (but still running the KDE-3.5.10 desktop), the Packman packaged KDE4-kdenlive (v.0.7.2.1) package works nicely on KDE-3.5.10 !!     I made some 15-minute long videos over the weekend (with many many dozens of short video/still image clips in side) with the kdenlive-0.7.2.1 (packaged by Packman).  It worked well.

I'm not quite ready to make the jump to KDE4, but I suspect with openSUSE-11.2 (possibly coming out late this summer) I'll likely move to KDE4 then.  Hence I hope you have success in sorting this.

But if you struggle, and wish to go back to a stable KDE, the openSUSE-11.1 KDE-3.5.10 is stable and the latest kdenlive-0.7.2.1 runs well on that desktop on openSUSE-11.1.

Hi folks,

had some time to toy around. Unfortunately I could not (yet) track down the problem. I did set up a second installation of SuSE 11.1 for checking kdenlive. (Did not want to mess around with the packets of my normal installation.) Installed SuSE, installed kdelive from packman, installed KDE 4.2.1 from the opensuse KDE repository and see: kdenlive works fine on the test system. I did itroduce a new user to my working system, to have a clean start with default settings for kdenlive, but kdenlive crashes quickly on the working system.

Almost all packages are identical between the two systems. The only major difference is, that I use English in the test system and German on my working system. I do not want to say, that the localization has to be the problem. As well I might have screwed up my working system.

Next update will come, when I found out more.

Regards, Zed.

Hi folks,

good news so far. Meanwhile I am running KDE 4.2.2 with QT 4.5 from OpenSuSE factory repository. Today I have updated my packages from packman repository to obtain the new kdenlve 0.7.3. The first quick test shows good results. Thanks a lot to the kdenlive developers for their excellent work!

Best regards, Zed.
